HOW TO CELEBRATE CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH 2023 IN NYC
Caribbean American Heritage Month was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005 to recognize the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States.
In NYC, the mecca of the Caribbean diaspora outside of the islands, means there is quite a bit to do in celebration of Caribbean culture! Check out our round-up of must-check out events!
Jazz at Lincoln Center with Etienne Charles (June 9,10)
Jazz at Lincoln Center will host Carnival: The Sound of a People, by Trinidad-born, Juilliard-trained trumpeter Etienne Charles. A scholar of Caribbean music and conservator of traditions who also extends the traditions in everything he does, Charles says of Carnival: “It’s music. It’s dance. It’s costume. It’s improvisation. It’s history. It’s social commentary, political commentary. It’s all of that in one word. And the only way to do it in a show is to have as much of it as possible.” This show makes its Jazz at Lincoln Center debut, rescheduled from June of 2020.

CCADI: Let's Dance Uptown Nights W/Yasser Tejada and DJ Sabine Blaizin (June 8)
Join the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute for a celebration of June as Caribbean Heritage Month & Black Music Appreciation Month through the presentation of Yasser Tejada representing traditional Afro-Dominican sounds with a Futuristic lens and DJ Sabine Blaizin spinning Global Soul anchored in her Haitian roots. CCADI is an arts, culture, education and media organization that advances cultural equity, racial and social justice for African descendant communities.

Community Dance Mambo (June 10)
In celebration of Caribbean-American Heritage Month, all are invited to experience the dynamic and creative energy of the Franck Muhel & His Mambo Dancers. Learn the traditional steps of the mambo from the renowned dancer and choreographer Franck Muhel whom you may have seen recently in the acclaimed movie "In the Heights". Then hit the dance floor with a live performance by the Mitch Frohman Latin Jazz Quartet.

Church Ave + Flatbush Ave BIDs Present ‘Island Rhythms’ (June 30)
